The Water Gipsy is a 75ft long static wide beamed Thames barge that has just been extensively refurbished. It is a lovely, bright and original space - an empty area with plenty of room for tables and chairs.

A small bar can be set up in the wheelhouse and in fine weather you can sit out on the deck and look out across the City Road Basin - three acres of water space; the second largest open space in the borough, in the very heart of the City.

Toilet facilities are nearby on the main site, as is a fully equipped kitchen and preparation space/room which can be hired separately.

Built in 1951 the Water Gipsy was our very first club 'hut' when we opened as a youth club back in 1970. The name Water Gipsy is from the book of the same title written by author AP Herbert who was the father of our founder Crystal Hale.

Now, after extensive refurbishment (thanks to some very generous funding!), the Water Gipsy is available for private hire.

Capacity

We suggest a maximum of 60 on the barge for a buffet-style event; 20 for a sit-down event. More can be managed however so please call and we can arrange for you to view the barge interior.

Events

Most recent events have included WeFifo supper clubs, family photo shoot and corporate parties. Hire possibilities also include: private birthday parties, small wedding receptions, christening parties, company Christmas party - just ask and we will do our best to help.

We are also able to offer the barge as a meeting facility on a regular basis if required - call us to discuss available dates and times. It’s a lovely space and venue for workshops and team building days; we can offer various additional activities to make the day a little different.
