What to Wear for Your First Paddling Session

Getting ready for your first paddling session can feel exciting and a little uncertain. One of the most common questions we’re asked at Islington Boat Club is: “What should I wear?”

The good news? You don’t need any specialist kit. With a few simple choices, you’ll be comfortable, confident and ready to enjoy your time on the water.

Dress for the Weather, Not the Water

For beginners, paddling sessions take place on calm, sheltered water. While you might get a little splash, you’re unlikely to get soaked. The key is to dress for the day’s weather rather than assuming you’ll be swimming.

Think practical, comfortable and quick-drying.

Top Half: Layers Are Best

Choose:

  • A t-shirt or long-sleeve top made from synthetic or sports fabric

  • A light fleece or jumper if it’s cool

  • A waterproof or windproof jacket if it’s breezy or damp

Avoid cotton if possible, as it stays cold when wet.

Bottom Half: Comfortable and Flexible

Opt for:

  • Leggings, tracksuit bottoms or sports trousers

  • Shorts in warmer weather

Jeans and heavy fabrics aren’t ideal as they’re restrictive and slow to dry.

Footwear: Secure and Water-Friendly

Footwear is important for safety around the water’s edge.

Good options include:

  • Old trainers

  • Plimsolls

  • Water shoes

Avoid flip-flops, sliders or barefoot paddling, as they don’t provide enough grip or protection.

What About Cold Weather?

Paddling doesn’t stop when temperatures drop. In cooler months:

  • Add extra layers on top

  • Wear a warm base layer

  • Bring a spare set of clothes just in case

Your instructor will always make sure conditions are suitable and that everyone stays comfortable.

What Not to Bring

To keep things safe and simple, we recommend leaving:

  • Valuables

  • Loose jewellery

  • Phones (unless securely waterproofed)

Changing facilities may be available, but packing light is always best.

What We Provide

At Islington Boat Club, we provide:

  • Boats and paddles

  • Buoyancy aids (life jackets)

  • Qualified instructors and full safety briefings

All you need to bring is enthusiasm and maybe a towel.

Still Unsure? Just Ask

If you’re ever unsure about what to wear or what to bring, our team is happy to help. We want your first paddling experience to feel relaxed, welcoming and fun.
